Target architecture

Modernize deliberately, not because everything old needs replacing.

Legacy systems often contain years of valuable business knowledge. Successful modernization is about understanding what should change, why it should change and in what order.

From current state to target architecture

  • Assess an existing legacy architecture.
  • Identify constraints creating business and engineering impact.
  • Determine service and system boundaries.
  • Evaluate monolith decomposition.
  • Design APIs and integration patterns.
  • Introduce event-driven communication where it provides real value.
  • Evaluate cloud-native approaches.
  • Define security and identity boundaries.
  • Create an incremental migration strategy.
  • Support teams during implementation.
Pragmatism

Modernization without unnecessary complexity

Microservices, serverless computing, containers and event-driven architectures can solve important problems. They can also create new ones.

The useful question is: what architectural approach best addresses the constraints we actually have?

Sometimes that means decomposing a monolith. Sometimes it means improving the monolith. Sometimes it means extracting only the components that benefit from independent scalability or deployment.

Legacy WCF to AWS modernization

I've led architecture work involving modernization of legacy WCF-based applications toward AWS architectures using approaches including serverless services and independently deployable components.

Responsibilities have included existing-system assessment, identifying architectural risks, target architecture, monolith decomposition, technology evaluation, security/IAM, migration strategy, implementation leadership and ongoing architecture review.
